"Flights to Lisbon from €39!" sounds like a weekend for nothing. Then come the hotel, bags, airport train, dinners and museum tickets — and suddenly the trip costs ten times the headline. Below we add it all up for eight popular European cities, and we show what most comparison sites leave out: how many hours you actually get to enjoy.
Why the flight price is a bad guide
Flight search engines sort by fare because that's what they sell. For a short city break, though, the flight is usually the smaller part of the bill. In our model below, return flights for two make up roughly 10–35 % of the total. Accommodation and food almost always cost more — and they vary much more between cities than fares do.
That has a practical consequence: a "cheap" destination with an expensive flight can easily beat an "expensive" destination with a cheap flight. Kraków or Budapest with a €120 fare will often cost less overall than Amsterdam or Copenhagen with a €60 fare.
The real cost of 3 nights from Frankfurt
Here is our estimate for two adults travelling in comfort style (a good mid-range hotel, normal restaurants, one checked bag each). The last two columns show the waking hours you spend at your destination after all travel, and what each of those hours costs.
| Destination | Flights | Stay | Food | Local | Total | Holiday hours | € / hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krakow | €292 | €240 | €192 | €114 | €838 | 53 h 30 (84 %) | €15.67 |
| Budapest | €293 | €270 | €208 | €144 | €915 | 53 h 10 (83 %) | €17.22 |
| Prague | €214 | €315 | €224 | €138 | €891 | 54 h 15 (85 %) | €16.41 |
| Ljubljana | €255 | €285 | €280 | €128 | €948 | 53 h 55 (84 %) | €17.58 |
| Porto | €461 | €315 | €256 | €132 | €1,164 | 51 h 20 (80 %) | €22.66 |
| Vienna | €250 | €420 | €320 | €186 | €1,176 | 54 h 10 (85 %) | €21.71 |
| Amsterdam | €203 | €570 | €360 | €188 | €1,321 | 54 h 45 (86 %) | €24.13 |
| Copenhagen | €267 | €630 | €480 | €250 | €1,627 | 54 h 10 (85 %) | €30.06 |

What drives the total
1. Accommodation is the biggest variable
A good double room in Copenhagen, Paris or Amsterdam typically costs at least twice as much as in Kraków or Budapest. Over three nights, that difference alone is often larger than the entire flight cost. If you want a city break on a budget, choose the city by its hotel prices first.
2. Food and drink add up quickly
Two people eating out three times a day for four days is a serious line item, and price levels across Europe differ enormously. That's why we include it — a total without food is not a total.
3. Bags and transfers are the hidden extras
Many low fares don't include a checked bag. On a short trip, two bags each way can cost as much as one of the tickets. Airport transfers are smaller, but in cities with expensive airport trains or taxis they still matter. We count both.
4. Time is a cost too
Every trip has a door-to-door overhead: getting to the airport, security, the flight, the transfer at the other end. On a three-night trip you have about 64 waking hours; travel eats roughly 10–13 of them. A flight that leaves at 6 a.m. or lands at midnight costs you more holiday than its price suggests. That's why Waylumio shows real holiday hours and the cost per hour for every trip.
Five ways to cut the real cost (not just the fare)
- Pick the city by total cost. Compare complete trips, not fares. Waylumio ranks destinations by the full estimate, then lets you check live partner prices.
- Travel light. If you can manage with cabin bags, you save the bag fees for every traveller, both ways.
- Look at shoulder months. Hotels in spring and autumn are often noticeably cheaper than in summer or during big events. Each destination page shows the best months.
- Prefer good flight times over the lowest fare. A slightly more expensive mid-morning flight can give you half a day more at your destination.
- Consider the hidden-gem twin. Ljubljana instead of Venice or Porto instead of Lisbon often saves on hotels and food. See our hidden gems guide.
How Waylumio calculates the total
For every trip, we combine the best fare we can find (cached prices from our flight partners when available, otherwise a distance-based estimate) with editorial estimates for accommodation, food, local transport and activities. Each line is labelled as cached, estimate or — once you have checked it with a partner — your own quote. When you add the pieces to your package, the total updates with the real prices you found, so you always know exactly where you stand.
FAQ
How much does a weekend city break in Europe cost for two?
From Frankfurt, our model puts three nights for two people in comfort style somewhere between roughly €800 in central and eastern Europe and over €1,500 in Scandinavia or Paris. Budget style costs much less, premium much more.
Is it cheaper to book flight and hotel together?
Sometimes. Package deals can be good value, especially for beach holidays. For city breaks, always compare the package price with the total of separate bookings — the Waylumio package builder adds up the separate parts for you.
